Galvanic Corrosion

Galvanic corrosion (Dissimilar Metal Corrosion) : This is a electro-chemical process in which one material corrodes when in contact with another material

Conditions that must exist for galvanic corrosion: 

  1. Two electrochemically dissimilar metals with different anodic index.
  2. Electrically conductive path between the two metals for the metal ions to move from the more anodic metal to the more cathodic metal.

In real life its very difficult to avoid dissimilar metals come in contact, the galvanic compatibility of a metal is controlled by finishes and plating.The finish/plating selected facilitate the dissimilar materials being in contact and protect the base materials from corrosion.
