Powder Coating

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as dry powder. Powder Coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a skin. Powder coating is mainly used for coating on metal parts.

Powder Coating can not be used for coating on plastic parts due to the high heat necessary for the curing process.

All About Anodising - SMLease Mechanical Design

Anodising is an electrolytic process for producing thick oxide coatings, usually on aluminium and its alloys. Magnesium and Titanium also can be anodised. It is used to give improved surface resistance to wear and corrosion, or as a decorative layer.

Machining, drilling or welding of the component should be done before anodising.


Aluminium Anodising Specifications : MIL-A-8625 

Military Specification MIL-A-8625 is the most common specification for anodizing in use.

  • Type II Sulfuric Acid Anodising (common or “standard” anodising)
  • Type III Sulphuric Acid Anodising (hard or “hard coat” anodising)
  • Class 1 – Undyed (clear)
  • Class 2- Dyed
  • MIL-A-8625 would be called out on a drawing as follows: “MIL-A-8625, Type II, Class 2, black”

Chromate conversion coating is a type of conversion coating used to passivate zinc-plated Steel, aluminium, copper, silver, magnesium and tin alloys parts to provide protection from white rust or red rust.

Chromate conversion coating is primarily used as a corrosion inhibitor, primer, decorative finish or to retain electrical conductivity. Chromates can come in many different colour variations: clear, blue, yellow, or black.

The chromate process provides a clear iridescent to slightly golden iridescent film of low contact resistance.  

Aluminium chromate conversion coatings improve the corrosion resistance of wrought, heat treatable and cast aluminium alloys while providing an excellent base for subsequent painting or powder coating services.

  • Aluminium chromate conversion coatings, often referred to as chemical film or under the trade names Alodine or Irridite, produce a thin coating in the range of 0.25 - 1 microns in thickness.
