Prototyping is very important stage in product design life cycle. Prototyping is done for initial validation and verification of design. Any modification in Injection mould requires money and time. Prototyping of plastic part is done to validate product design before injection moulding to reduce product timeline and cost.

Depending on product aesthetics & functional requirements, prototyping process is selected.

FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling)

Heated thermoplastic comes out through a nozzle layer by layer to form parts. ABS, ASA, Nylon, PC, PC+ABS, PLA materials are available for 3D printing. Industrial grade materials for medical and aerospace industry are also available. Check out in details about FDM Here

SLA (Stereolithography)

SLA 3D printers create 3D printed parts from a liquid photo-polymer resin by using a light source to solidify the liquid material. Check out in details about SLA here

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering)

SLS is an additive manufacturing process that requires a laser to sinter powdered material to get the final product.

  • Complex parts can be manufactured with good accuracy

CNC Machining

CNC machining plastic rapid prototyping is done by removing material from a solid block. Raw material for CNC machined Rapid prototyping are available in material like ABS, PC, ABS+PC, HDPE, Nylon, Hard PVC etc in different colours and size.

  • High and low temperature, Product IP rating, Drop test, temperature cycle testing, vibration tests can be done on CNC machined plastic prototypes.
  • Tolerance in the range of 50 to 100 microns can be achieved with CNC machined plastic prototypes.
  • Post processing operations (buffing, painting, sand blasting) are required to achieve good aesthetic finish and colour in cnc machined prototypes.
  • CNC Prototypes are recommended for small quantity requirements, because of high manufacturing cost. 

Vacuum Casting ( Silicon Rubber Mould )

Vacuum Casting requires a master piece (generally 3D printed part) that is used for the manufacturing of Silicone Mould.

For the manufacturing of plastic components, silicone mould is filled with a two part polyurethane resin under vacuum and then processed for required time in a heat chamber at controlled temperature. Approx 10 to 15 number of silicon moulded plastic parts can be manufactured with one silicon mould. Optically clear grade raw material (polyurethane resin) is also available for silicon moulding

  • Vacuum Casting is a technology of Rapid Prototyping for the production of plastic components in small quantities.
  • Plastic prototypes manufactured with silicon moulding are functional and identical to production parts. Vacuum casting plastic parts are equivalent to injection moulded parts.
  • Minimum finishing operations are required in parts manufactured with vacuum casting as compared to cnc machining.
  • Plastic prototypes manufactured with vacuum casting are less costly as compared to cnc machined prototypes

Rapid Tooling

  • Tooling for Rapid injection moulding can be manufactured with 3D printed plastic, 3D printing metal, Aluminium.
  • These quick turn  injection tools are used for small quantity production. Lead time for rapid tooling is approximate 10 to 15 days.
  • 3D printed plastic injection moulding tool is used for manufacturing small quantities : 15 to 20 nos. Hand moulding machines are prefered for 3D printed injection moulding tool.
  • Some times depending on product complexity quality of the parts coming out of rapid tools are not up to mark
