IP Rating – SMLease Design

What Is IP-Rating ?

IP Stands for Ingress Protection and consists of 2 numbers.

First number indicates protection of persons against access to hazardous parts and protection of machines/equipment against entry of solid parts.

Second number indicates protection of machines/equipment against harmful ingress of water.

Depending on product application. every product, requires a level of protection against water and solid objects. EN 60529 and IEC 60509:1988 standards has defined the IP rating in details.

In this article we will discuss, various levels of IP ratings and their application.

Levels of IP Rating

First Number

1st number in IP Rating indicates protection of persons against access to hazardous parts and protection of machines/equipment against entry of solid parts.

Level X : Protection level is not defined

Level 0 : No Protection

Level 1 – Protection of the back of hand against access to hazardous parts and protection of the equipment from objects larger than 50 mm in size

Level 2 : Protection of fingers against access to hazardous parts and protection of the equipment from objects larger than 12.5 mm in size.

Level 3 : Protection of persons holding tools and wires (greater than 2.5 mm) against access to hazardous parts and protection of the equipment from objects larger than 2.5 mm in size

Level 4 : Protection of persons holding tools and wires (greater than 1 mm) against access to hazardous parts and protection of the equipment from objects larger than 1 mm in size

Level 5 : Protection against entry of dust in sufficient quantity to interfere with satisfactory operation of product.

Level 6 : Complete Protection against entry of dust.

Second Number

Second number in IP Rating indicates protection of machines/equipment against harmful ingress of water.

Level X : Level of Protection is not Defined

Level 0 : No Protection

Level 1 : Protection against drops of water falling vertically.

Test : Water equivalent to 1 mm of rainfall per minute for 10 minutes

Level 2 : Protection against drops of water falling vertically when housing is tilted at an angle 15 degree from vertical.

Test: Water equivalent to 3 mm of rainfall per minute for 10 minutes

Level 3 : Protection against spraying of water at angle 60 degree from vertical.

Test : Water volume= 0.7 Ltr/min, Pressure= 80-100 K-pa for 10 minutes

Level 4 : Protection against spraying of water at from all directions.0

Test : Water volume=10 Ltr/min, Pressure= 80-100 K-pa for 10 minutes

Level 5 : Protection of equipment against low pressure water jets from all directions.

Test : Water Volume = 12.5 Ltr/min, Pressure=30 K-pa from a distance of 3 meter for 3 minutes, Nozzle Size=6.3 mm

Level 6 : Protection of equipment against heavy sea or high pressure water jets from all directions.

Test : Water volume=100 Ltr/min, Pressure=100 K-pa from at a distance 3 meter for 3 minutes, Nozzle Size – 12.5mm

Level 7 : Protection against temporary immersion in one meter water for 30 minutes

If any product is certified with IP 67 rating, that means it is fully protected from dust and can also withstand being submerged in 1 meter of static water for up to 30 minutes.
